Pembroke Senior Spotlight: Don’t Get Scammed By Vinyl Siding Salesmen!

Good judgement comes from experience, and often experience comes from bad judgement. That’s from one of my favorite authors, Rita Mae Brown, and I’m here today telling my story so you all can benefit from my experience and exercise your own good judgement.” Every eye in the Senior Center is riveted on Holly, who at 81 years of age was taking to the stage to warn other seniors about vinyl siding scams.

“I was at home, minding my own business, when there’s a knock on the door, and this nicely dressed young gentleman said he needed to talk to me about my house. He said I was in danger of violating some type of building code because my siding was sagging and in poor repair.

When I asked what I was supposed to do about that, he gave me a card, told me to call the people, and they’d install new siding for me before the city inspections. He even said I’d get a discounted price, because I’m a senior! So I called, and put down a deposit for my new siding to be installed – and I never saw them again. When I called the city looking for that building inspector, it turns out that he doesn’t work there. The code I was supposedly in danger of violating? Doesn’t even exist.” Holly shook her head. “Now you know how they took me.  Don’t let them take you!”

It’s good advice. Reputable vinyl siding companies don’t do door to door sales, and they certainly don’t solicit business by implying you’re in violation of some mysterious building code.
